Nampa Optimist Park kicks off with football

Sandra Forester - Statesman

About 500 kids played football Wednesday on seven fresh fields at Nampa Optimist Park.

Nampa Optimists celebrated the grand opening of their namesake park off Birch Lane and 11th Avenue North Extension with free hot dogs and play time.

About 100 Nampa Optimist cheerleaders performed, as well.

The flag and tackle football teams will play their first official games at the 25-acre park on Saturday.

Girls and boys ages 7 to 12 can play.

Optimist members worked with Centennial Job Corps and city staff to install sprinklers. They also designed and built terraced seating for those who watch the games.

Members are raising about $60,000 to build storage for football gear and equipment to maintain the fields. The city will construct a building for concessions and restrooms when funds become available.

Nampa Urban Renewal Agency purchased the land for the park.
